Plenary speech by the Ambassador of Algeria, Mr Abdelaziz Benali Cherif at the 10th BRICS NDB Assembly

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful
President of the New Development Bank, M.S. Dilma Rousseff,
Ministers, representatives of the Governors of NDB,
It is my great pleasure to represent Algeria at NDB’s 10th Annual Meeting. This is the first time that Algeria is attending as a full member of this institution following the sovereign decision taken by the President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, HE Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to join this new and strategic financial institution. This makes Algeria the first Global South country to join the NDB. I had the honor of submitting the instrument of accession to the Brazilian government on May 19. Through this accession, my country, Algeria, seeks to take its niche position and play an advanced role in the new global financial system to which Global South countries aspire, having suffered for decades from an unfair financial system that has only made them poorer and more indebted. The outstanding economic growth achieved by Algeria in recent years will allow us to play a dynamic and effective role, specially under its horizontal structure which allows its members to act and take their decisions independently in a harmonious way in favor of the countries of the South, away from the dominations and dictates that we are used to with the traditional international financial institutions.
I do not want to go long-winded, but before ending my speech, I would like to praise the pioneering role of President, Dilma Rousseff and congratulate her, in the name of Algeria, for being reelected as the president of the Bank. Further, I would like to thank Mr. President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Lula da Silva, for his speech, and the greetings he extended to Algeria, on the occasion of attending our meeting. I also would like to thank all ministers and all members of this bank that welcomed Algeria as one of their partners and members. Thank you and I wish you all success in your businesses. You can trust Algeria, because we are ready to play the role that aligns with this new insight into the world through building financial institutions, apart from the approach we used to adopt to date, which in many cases led to many of the crises we face nowadays.
