Mr. Attaf Participates in the Proceedings of the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation

The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Ataf, participated in the proceedings of the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, held on August 27 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The session saw the nomination of the Mauritanian candidate, Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, as the new Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, succeeding Mr. Hussein Ibrahim Taha of the Republic of Chad.

This session also provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, in light of the continuing and escalating Israeli violations against the Palestinian people and the resulting serious deterioration of the humanitarian and security situation.

In this context, the participants stressed the need to intensify efforts and take collective action to put an end to Israeli attacks and violations and to provide international protection for the Palestinian people, thereby ensuring respect for their legitimate national rights.

For his part, the Minister of State, in his speech, reaffirmed Algeria’s firm and unwavering stance in support of the Palestinian cause and the legitimate and inalienable national rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among which is their right to establish their own independent and sovereign state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in accordance with international resolutions.

Mr. Ahmed Ataf also called for an end to Israeli aggression against Arab territories, stressing the need to respect the sovereignty of states and the territorial integrity of their lands, and emphasizing the importance of de-escalation and prioritizing dialogue and peaceful means in resolving crises, thereby creating the conditions necessary to establish security and stability in the Middle East.

The Minister of State reiterated the importance of strengthening joint Islamic action and unifying positions on the challenges facing the Islamic world, thereby enabling the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to play its role more effectively in defending the interests of member states and their just causes.
