The advantages of studying in Algeria are numerous. You can study Literature, Art,  Technology,  or  Medicine.  The  languages  of  instruction  are  French, English and Arabic, depending on the specialisms chosen. For example, in the University Pole of Excellence located on the outskirts of the capital, Algiers, teaching is entirely in English. Why study in Algeria ?

A Scientific Hub, Natural Biodiversity, Cultural Wealth, and Human Generosy

Located in North Africa, Algeria consists of 58 provinces and has 1,200 km of Mediterranean  coastline,  as  well  as  a  diverse  landscape  featuring  plains, high plateaus, mountain ranges, and a vast desert covering 2 million km².

The official languages are Arabic and Tamazight.  Other languages such as French and  English  are also  spoken.  The  predominantly  youthful  Algerian  population counts 46.63 million of mostly Muslim inhabitants of diverse cultural backgrounds, known for their passion for sports and artistic expressions, rich culinary traditions, immense generosity, lively humor, and strong national pride

At a crossroads of Arab, African and Mediterranean cultures, Algeria is home to numerous Numidian and Roman sites. There are seven Algerian landmarks and monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

Djemila (in Sétif province)

The M’zab Valley (in Ghardaïa province)

Each Algerian city has its own distinct musical, culinary, and traditional attire style. Festivals are held throughout the year to celebrate historical milestones, religious holidays, and cultural events.

The University Network in Algeria

The Algerian University network extends to 117 higher education institutions across 48 of the 69 provinces.

Closely correlated  to the  socio-economic  local  fabric,  this  university network, consists of 55 universities, 9 university centers, 40 national higher schools, and 13 higher teacher-training colleges.

Since 1962, Algerian universities have trained over 65,000 international students from 62 countries, particularly, in the fields of medical sciences, technology, and social and human sciences.

The Algerian Higher Education System

Training offers in  Algeria allow  for the development of a study path  tailored

specifically to the needs and evolution of the student’s study project.

Higher Education Institutions offer students several access paths to higher education:

Universities: Offer training leading to a Licence /Bachelor’s degree (3 years), Master’s degree (5 years), Integrated Bachelor-Master degree (5 years), Engineering degrees (5 years), and Medical Sciences degrees [including: Medicine (7 years), Dental Medicine and Pharmacy (6 years), Veterinary Science (6 years)], and Architecture (5 years), as well as PhD Degrees in various disciplines (8 years).

University Centers: Provide training for the Bachelor’s degree (3 years) and Master’s degree (5 years), including Integrated Bachelor-Master programs (5 years), as well as, PhD Degrees (8 years).

Higher National Schools: They are organized in field specialisms and offer a five-year training program, consisting of a two-year foundation course, followed by a three-year specialization. After successful completion of the initial two years of training, access to the specialization phase is contingent upon succeeding at the competitive entrance exam organized by the school.

Study Cycles and Degrees Awarded

Algerian universities offer a general academic program based on the LMD system, structured around three academic cycles.

Bachelor’s Degree: consists of three years higher education. The programs are based on the core fundamentals of each specialism.

Master's  Degree:  a  two-year  program,  which  provides  students  with advanced knowledge in a specific field. Students must complete and submit a final dissertation defended in a public viva voce examination.

PhD Degree: involves three years of academic research, during which candidates  prepare  and  submit  a  PhD  thesis,  defended  in  a public  viva  voce examination.

Scientific Infrastructures

Moodle:  This is an educational platform which provides access to courses, tutorials, exercises, and assignments. An account is assigned to each student upon enrollment at the university

Progress: this is a digital platform used by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research designed to enhance services for the university community. It enables the academic monitoring of students, from registration and right through their educational path.

Supports Structures

Incubators

serve as hosting and support structures, ensuring the development of innovative projects and the valorization of scientific research products among students from various disciplines, who can benefit from training programs organized and led by incubator trainers and coaches, whose role is to induct them into entrepreneurial thinking and behavior. Student project-holders are guided from the initial stage of the first idea to the final creation of their projects after graduation. This space enables students to gain knowledge, express themselves, and actively engage in developing their business ideas.

Entrepreneurship  Development Center (CDE)

As part of the strategy to link Algerian universities with the needs of the national economy, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in partnership with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Start-Ups, and Micro-Enterprises, has established Entrepreneurship Development Centers (CDE) within all Algerian universities. These centers provide a dynamic space for interaction and the implementation of programs focused on business creation for students. CDEs offer comprehensive training programs covering all aspects of business management, from strategic planning and financial management to marketing and sales. These training programs are essential for equipping student entrepreneurs with the necessary skills to successfully implement their projects.

Technology and Innovation Support Center (CATI)

The CATI serves as a support structure for faculty members,  researchers, and

students in the field of industrial property by providing the following services: access to patent databases, assistance and  advice in  intellectual property management (patent  drafting,  commercialization,  etc.),  and  support  in  business  creation

(trademark registration, designs and industrial models, etc.). The CATI was established through a partnership agreement with the Algerian National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI) under the Ministry of Industry

Artificial Intelligence House (MIA)

The Artificial Intelligence House is a dedicated space for exploration, learning, and innovation in the field of Artificial Intelligence. It promotes interdisciplinarity by bringing together students, researchers, and professionals from various backgrounds to whom it provides pedagogical support in integrating AI into their respective fields of study, thus fostering research and development in Artificial Intelligence within academic institutions.

FabLab

It is a  manufacturing laboratory dedicated  to the creation  and  sharing of new products, allowing both beginners and experts alike to make new objects, repair or repurpose existing ones, as well as develop and test prototypes for students who are project-holders

University Accelerators

encompass all programs designed to help mature innovative projects develop more

rapidly by providing a range of specialized services, professional consultations, and intensive programs for a limited period generally ranging from 3 to 6 months. These accelerators assist in drafting business plans and economic models, enabling start- ups to achieve rapid growth.

Business-University Liaison Office (BLEU)

Its main objective is to strengthen the university’s openness to, and engagement

with, its socio-economic environment, especially by promoting scientific, technical and technological research. Enhancing the importance of degrees as an additional value for the universities, the office serves as an interface providing a source of impetus, advice, and support for university teams and their industrial partners.

Languages of Instruction

 

The languages of instruction in Algeria are Arabic, French, and English, depending on the academic fields and specialisms chosen.

Students who do not master the language of instruction undergo an intensive training period at the Intensive Language Teaching Centers (CEIL) affiliated to their higher education institutions.

University services and Student Life

Accommodation

Student accommodation is provided by the National Office for University Services. The Algerian university services network consists of 66 university services directorates and 466 university residences spread across the country, accommodating more than 400,000 students, including international students

Catering

University restaurants offer students the opportunity to have nutritious and balanced meals, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Transportation

Your student card gives you access to university transportation services ensuring

shuttle services between university residences and higher education institutions (round trips). The mobile application, MyBus, provides students with all the necessary information, including bus schedules, bus stops and routes in each university city. A mobile version of the application is available for students.

Health Coverage

Students have access to health care services within their institutions and university residences.

Medical  teams  composed  of  general  practitioners,  dental  surgeons,  nurses  are equipped with all the necessary medical facilities. These teams provide medical care for all students during the academic year.

Leisure Activities

In collaboration with students’ organizations and scientific clubs, the universities regularly organize scientific, cultural, tourist and sports activities for the benefit of all students.

University Holidays

During their academic year, students enjoy university holidays at the end of their semesters and have Winter, Spring and Summer breaks.

Enrollment of International Students

1) International Students: Legal Framework

In accordance to Presidential Decree No. 25-83 of February 20, 2025, which defines

the conditions  and procedures  for  admitting foreign  students into Algerian  higher education  and training  institutions,  international  students  are  eligible  to  enroll  in

Algerian universities provided that they are admitted by the host institution based on the number of available academic seats allocated annually, and that they cover the tuition fees required for their studies.

2) Enrollment Procedures

The application file must include the following documents:

  • A  certified  translated  copy  of  the  diploma  granting  access  to  the  desired academic program.
  • A certified translated copy of academic transcripts from previous studies.
  • A certificate of nationality, if applicable.
  • A copy of the candidate’s valid passport.
  • A motivation letter.
  • At least one letter of recommendation.
  • A medical certificate confirming that the candidate is free from bacterial and/or contagious diseases.
  • A recent passport-sized photograph

3) Authentication of Academic Documents

The authentication of academic documents is carried out by the relevant services of the

Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Following authentication of

diplomas and verification of the submitted academic transcripts, the Equivalence Department issues two documents: a certificate of equivalence of the provided degree (in accordance with the Algerian Degrees classification) and a document establishing the equivalence of the grades provided in relation to a corresponding Algerian grid.
